Cheeky, indulgent, and undoubtedly hip, our all-time favorite design studio, Futura, shed some light on the creative thinking behind their latest brand + interiors project, Motín.

Can you tell us about the initial project conversations with the client?
Angela (the chef and owner) already has a restaurant in Condesa neighborhood. We wanted to preserve the comfort food feeling of the first restaurant, but with a much more modern, youthful and modern look.

Can you talk us through the thinking behind the final design?
We wanted to take a little risk and give another name and concept to the new restaurant, like a fresh start, but as we said before, keeping as inspiration the comfort around the brand: you can find comfort in the food, in the illustrations of the cute gluttonous hamster trying to steal your lunch and in interiors that make you feel at home. For the name Motín we made a play on words, all related to food, breakfast, and gluttony: matin means morning in French, botín (loot in Spanish) thinking again about our hamster stealing your food and keeping it in its huge cheeks, and motín (riot in Spanish). Like a food riot: eat all the pancakes you can and then run away.
Our main goal was to create a space that felt cozy but full of color at the same time, a space that you would immediately want to share on Instagram. We wanted to design a place that was completely eye candy and what better color for this than pink along with some other darker and intense colors to complement the environment.

Did you face any challenges during the project?
We didn’t know if Angela would feel comfortable changing the whole concept of her brand for this new place. It is also risky to use “childish” illustrations in a place that is supposed to be for grown-ups. But everything coexists really well.
What was your favorite part of the process?
Designing the interiors, we would LOVE to have more interior design projects.

You clearly put a lot of effort into presenting your projects. Do you have any advice for other hoping to up-level their own portfolio presentation?
Great you asked! We are in the process of preparing an online portfolio workshop. We will keep you informed 🙂

Behind the Brief is an interview series celebrating the creative process where we speak to the team behind the project, pulling back the curtain on their design thinking, strategy and process to learn how they arrived at the final design.
